Workshop is 15 minutes
Started by cousins Jon and Tom, Handsome Frank is a UK based illustration agency that represents 35 of the best illustrators from around the world; including the creative likes of Malika Favre, Jean Jullien, Hey, Sarah Maycock and Jordan Metcalf.
Whether you’re a student, just starting out or a seasoned freelancer looking to gain more commissions in the commercial world of illustration, this is a great opportunity to have your portfolio constructively critiqued by one of the leading illustration agencies in the world.
For this portfolio review you will need to bring along a printed and/or digital portfolio of your work, you may also bring a recent sketchbook if you wish. You must also be prepared to talk about your work 😃
Portfolio reviews are 15 minutes long. Once you’ve booked please wait for us to contact you regarding your time slot.
We caught up with Handsome Frank agent, Amy, to ask her which artists she’s enjoying, which apps she couldn’t live without and what she’s currently listening to.
Can you tell us what an average work day looks like?
It starts with coffee, then the first wave of emails, which consist of speaking to illustrators and sorting out jobs, looking at roughs or final artwork, then looking over some contracts, more emails, lunch, then some more emails. I also usually go out a couple of times a week to meet clients as well.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Let’s just say I have an eclectic taste in music, but my usual genre is folk. I’m listening to a lot of Jackson C. Frank at the moment, but Stu my colleague usually sends me a Friday playlist to get me in the mood for the weekend. I still can’t get Vulfpeck’s Conscious Club out of my head.
I’m always trying to keep an eye on what’s out there
What apps can’t you live without?
Instagram mainly, as we deal with visual communication and I’m always trying to keep an eye on what’s out there – plus it is definitely a way I find out about new illustrators.
Which designers / artists work are you enjoying at the moment?
Apart from all the HF artists – I’m currently loving the work of Laura Callaghan, August Wren, Camille Walala, and Bodil Jane.
Do you have a subscription with any magazines?
I’m subscribed to Campaign. This is so I can see what’s going on mostly in advertising and branding. I enjoy it as you can get an insight into one of our sectors we work in and it’s very useful.
If you could choose one artist, dead or alive, to decorate your house, who would it be?
Without a doubt, Grayson Perry. He’s already designed a house and I love his thought process, but I would also want to be involved as I love interior design and have lots of plans for my future place.
