Founded by illustrator turned woodsman Andrew Groves and later joined by wife Emma Hughes, Miscellaneous Adventures was conceived whilst hiking in the Swedish wilderness and brought to life in a small woodland barn in the Sussex countryside.

Miscellaneous Adventures produces hand made camping gear and promotes reconnection with nature on monthly woodland based workshops.

Inspired by Scandinavian and Japanese culture, life in the woods and a desire to combine creativity with outdoor living, Miscellaneous Adventures produces hand made camping gear and promotes reconnection with nature on monthly woodland based workshops.

During this 3 hour workshop you will:

  • Discover more about working with wood and some of its amazing properties.
  • Learn to use carving tools by carving your own wooden spoon from birch.
  • Learn about useful tree species and some other woodland secrets.
  • Discover wider applications of woodcarving techniques.
  • Learn how to explore nature in a creative way.

You won’t need to bring anything with you. All materials and tools for are included in the price of the ticket. Tea and coffee will be provided.

We caught up with Miscellaneous Adventures to find out which artists they’re enjoying, which apps they couldn’t live without and what they’re currently listening to.

Can you tell us what an average work day looks like?

There is no such thing as an average day for us; we juggle multiple projects, jobs and activities – some weather dependent – so we tend to take each day as it comes. Whatever we’re up to we make sure that coffee and snacks are central to our routine.

What are you listening to at the moment?

We have nice quiet, woodland studio and living space so we tend to just listen to what’s going on outside around us.

What apps can’t you live without?

I literally hate phones and apps and I’d happily live without them all but Instagram is an important tool for us to connect with our friends and followers and spread the word about what we’re up to.

You can check out their Instagram page here.

Favourite piece of equipment in the studio/work space?

I don’t think there is one particular item, but we highly treasure all our books in our workspace.

Which designers/artists work are you enjoying at the moment?

Designer and illustrator Vicki Turner and designer Geoffrey Holstad.

Do you have a subscription with any magazines?

We don’t have any subscriptions but we really like The Rolling Home Journal and Another Escape.
