Born in Lisbon, lived in Ausberg, Germany, studied and worked in Barcelona, and currently resides in Amsterdam, Marta is well travelled and her multidisciplined work – working across branding, set design, art direction and illustration – is as diverse as the places she’s called home.

Inspired by pop-culture, folk art, pound shops and Tumblr and fascinated by inventions, colour, movement and compositions, Marta’s work is bold, colourful and punchy. Whether in the digital realm or on a three-dimensional scale, she combines different disciplines and mediums to build engaging experiences.

Marta boasts an impressive roster of clients to boot, having worked with Adidas, Reebok, Lego, Vice, Dick Moby and Heineken to name but a few.

We caught up with Marta to ask her which artists she’s enjoying, which apps she couldn’t live without and what she’s currently listening to.

Can you tell us what an average work day looks like?

I like to wake up early, shower, get dressed quickly, then grab my bike to ride to my studio. It’s a 20 minute ride; on the way I go through the park which allows me to enjoy a bit of morning nature! The studio is also on the other side of the canal so I have to catch a 5 minute ferry – it’s lovely on sunny days. I work all day in my studio which I share with other creatives. We lunch together, play ping-pong then at the end of the day, I head off home. When possible, I like to take in an exhibition or gig.

What are you listening to at the moment?

The new Perfume Genius’ album, No Shape. They’re amazing and even more amazing live!

What apps can’t you live without?

Weather, Buinen Radar (helps to check the rain flow), Whatsapp & Mail.

Favourite piece of equipment in the studio?

This nice cutting table we have on top of a set of drawers, my scissors and, it’s not equipment, but I love my pink Mies van der Rohe chair. I also really love this old chair that I got from a friend. My friend had it for over 20 years and took it wherever she went; there’s something quite special about that!

Which designers / artists work are you enjoying at the moment?

I’ve enjoyed discovering a girl gang from LA called Baby Art Collective, Braulio Amado for poster design and I love the work of Gilles de Brock, specially the collaboration he did with textile designer, Yamuna Forzani. It’s pretty bonkers!

What’s your favourite place to escape to?

A big city. I especially like London; where you feel that you are one in a crowd and nobody knows you. I like that feeling.

Do you have a subscription with any magazines?

I used to be subscribed to Subbacultcha, a music platform which allows you to watch concerts – it always comes with a nice magazine. Apartamento and I’m thinking about subscribing to Vein.

If you could choose one artist, dead or alive, to decorate your house, who would it be?

David Hockney, Ettore Sottsass and Mike Kelly (that’s more than one, sorry!). I think they would create a super, explosive combination!
